Director IDs – deadline passed but ATO to take reasonable compliance approach
Article published on: 05-12-2022
The ATO has announced that they will be ‘taking a reasonable compliance approach’ towards directors trying to meet their obligations to apply for a Director ID. After 14 December 2022, directors who have missed the deadline to apply for a Director ID may be penalised. The deadline to apply for a director ID passed on 30 November 2022. The ATO will now allow an additional two weeks before penalties are applied if the director is trying to comply with their obligations.
The requirement to apply for a Director ID applies to all existing company directors. Those who were appointed from 1 November 2021 should already have a Director ID (as a result of the application timing requirements). Directors who were appointed on or before 31 October 2021 had until 30 November 2022 to apply. The Government announced in November that those who are not currently a director but were as at 31 October 2021 are not required to apply.
